Shopping can be very rewarding
and exciting in Kathmandu. There are numbers
tourists' shops on the main street and in the
arcades of hotels bursting with tempting jewelries,
image, clothes and typical Nepalese craft.
In some of the small village shops one can obtain
traditional makes and beautiful potteries.
Antiques can be taken out of the country with
special permission granted by the Dep. of Archeology
only. Traditional crafts mans colony in Patan
is also famous shopping center for Nepalese
handicraft.
Gurkha
knife is referred to as the well-known close
combat weapon of the Gurkha regiments. In Nepal,
Khukuri preserve its version as traditional
accessory knives and the blade notch represent
the trident of Shiva, the war god. Made using
high-carbon steel full-tang blade, khukuri's
exotic hardwood handle and steel butt plate make
it an ideal tool for the outdoorsman. The
Gurkhas were known for their craftiness and lack
of fear in glorious fighting involving the
deadly use of khukuri. The famous khukuri
carried by Gurkha soldiers is a side arm that
complements the main firearm.
